Finally we are getting down to brass tacks. No more romping in the woods to no purpose. At last we get to talk about OZORNE.
First of all, most of this book was an extended tour of the capital of Carthak. There were animals, but mostly the dragon and a marmoset which was fine.
Second of all, I just have to say that this whole series would be so much more fun if Daine could have an actual human friend to regularly collaborate with. Numair and Alanna are always vaguely there on the fringes of the story, but the main cast is always Daine And The Animals. It got to the point where it seemed almost contrived how hard the story was working to keep her from communicating anything that was going on with any of the human members of her party.
Most of the story was good. I don't even mind the slow unraveling of plot-through-touring because it's concerned with our central problem, which is Ozorne. The last 15% where Daine with seemingly a single, long sweep of her hand lays waste to the royal palace, is fantastic. I love that. The BEST part is, hands down, the hug at the end. This series could be literally fantastic if it would just give me more of that.

Excellent pacing and action and a broader view of some immortals you've seen before.
This was an interesting shift, with the addition of different setting and...dinosaurs!?! Pierce's take on our natural history in the world of the Immortals series was fun, (the dinosaurs and their extinction), but didn't feel completely in line with the fantastical.
The additional characters added some flavor and intrigue, and there was definitely greater mystery in this storyline that added to the suspense.

OUCH this one gets you right in the feels. Loved the cast of characters exploring Carthak and Daine finding all new animals. Loved the plot with gods and dinosaurs and mammoths and everything. So sad there's only one book left!
I LOVED THIS. I flew through it while the 2nd book took me some time. I was immediately into the story; I liked the change in setting and meeting all the new characters and creatures. Zek!! And Kaddar was so interesting, his relationship with Daine was great. I kept picturing the Graveyard Hag as a mix between Mulan's grandmother and the short Fate sister from Hercules. This book was so exciting and awesome, I think I'll start the next one right now. I really love Daine's powers and watching her learn more and more about her wild magic. Her communications with the variety of animals is my favorite! Also, every time Numair calls Daine "magelet" I die a little inside <3
Read this as a teenager, and it holds up. Especially the bit where Daine wrecks everything with the reanimated fossils. Still rad
Daine resurrecting dinosaurs and destroying a Palace with them is a very cool image. Didn't really like this one as much as the first two though. Still love graveyard hag.
Emperor Mage - 3.5/5⭐️
Genre: Young Reader Fantasy
I really really wanted to like this one, but I’m still struggling to connect with Daine. The plot in this quartet doesn’t feel nearly as strong as the Alanna quartet and the message feels a bit heavy-handed at times.
I think my issues with Daine kept me from getting fully invested in this series. It might also be the full-cast audio and the voice of Daine that’s really the problem as she comes off very whiny and over-dramatic. I ended up increasing the speed of the audiobook which helped since Tamora Pierce’s narration is incredibly slow. I’ll finish out the quartet but Alanna still has my heart ❤️
