I love this story it has been a long time since I read it more than twenty years maybe the story still holds up to this day. I really loved the characters especially Daine she is a very strong character whom has strong magic and communicates with all kinds of animals. She is very interesting getting along with certain people and doing what she can not to cause war since they are in a country that has attacked Tortall before. There are many great characters along with characters that were easy to hate all so very interesting to read. The plot was great it starts with the Tortall group going to Carthak for diplomatic reasons things happen the evil mage Ozorne does many not so great things and it ends looking forward to reading more.

I enjoyed this one, although it was definitely a lot more political than the other ones, and while politics are not always my favorite topic in books, I do like how this one played out. There was an unexpected moment about 2/3rds of the way through that had me rather upset, but ultimately, the ending was satisfying and I look forward to Daine's next adventure, even as she continues to grow and mature, both as a person and in her powers.

Like the first book, don't really care for the second book... Thankfully, this third book is probably my favorite of the whole series. So descriptive, and I'm half in love with Numair, Kaddar, and ok, yes, Rikash.
This is my favorite book in the series. The ending is probably my second favorite ending ever, second to Harry Potter 7, although I normally don't count HP books in the same category as other books...so that might make this book my favorite ever. It was also the first Tamora Pierce book that I ever read.
