Started a bit slower. I thought I wouldn't like it as much as I did, but the ending really made me fall in love with it. Numair is the best, and yes you can mention the age difference, but he's just so pure. They both are.

I found the dinosaurs a bit strange, but fine. They served a good purpose in the story.

Carthak was obviously a mixture of Egypt and Rome, but it was fun and never felt like a complete copy of any particular thing. Pierce has built a good world and knows how to show it.

The writing still isn't to my liking and I found quite a few spelling/grammar errors. Still, it's too fun to really care.

I love that she is strong through it all. She goes to a foreign land but still has spunkiness and courage.

Re-Read 2018:

In light of the release of Tamora Pierce's new book Tempests and Slaughter I felt the overpowering urge to reread Emperor Mage. While Numair features heavily in every book of the Immortals quartet, this one has the most interaction between Numair and his former friends and enemies in Carthak. I wanted a reminder of where they end up before I dived in to see where his story starts. Also, of the four books in this quartet, Emperor Mage contains some of my favourite moments of the series.
