I love Tamora Pierce's series. She has such a creative way of storytelling and has a ton of enticing characters. Daine is such a wholesome and relatable character; plus her abilities are by far one of my favorite in any fantasy novel! Cant wait to read the last book in the series!
I’ve so enjoyed finding comfort in these old favorites. I loved this installment of the series as a kid and still loved it as an adult. The characters travel to a neighboring empire and the change of scenery introduces a new and interesting setting. While these books are certainly simplistic (since they’re written for tweens), they are still fun.
This one was a bit strange, and took me a little longer to get through than the previous in this series. Still, I'm enjoying it, and I think it's shaping up to be an very interesting conclusion to this series in the next book.

Finally, we discover the wonderful and terrible empire of Carthak =)
After the exploits of Daine with animals, the emperor of Karthak himself requires her help to cure his favorite birds. Accompanied by Numair and a delegation from Tortall, Daine embarks to Karthak hoping that nothing will put a stop to the peace negotiations. Unfortunately, the gods seem to have decided otherwise ...
Since the beginning of the series (and even in others in the same universe), we hear a lot about the awful empire of Carthak and its wicked emperor but we had no more information until now ... and I confess that I have not been disappointed at all =D It was exactly as I imagined it : an enchanting setting with a beautiful luxurious palace, very artificial, full of mysteries, whispers and plots, a terrified court and an emperor as manipulative as mad. I TOTALLY loved it =D
The author's style is still great (descriptions of the menagerie were fantastic !!), the universe is MAGIC (many new creatures, more and more surprising ><) and plot and subplots take a new turn with the more flagrant intervention of the gods : I love the gods of this world and I must admit I have a soft spot for the Graveyard Hag >< She kicks ass =D
What I like in the series of Tamora Pierce is the fact that the characters grow and evolve very much. Daine is not at all the shy little girl, full of prejudice and unsure of herself that she was in the first book. She has grown up and she is now much better in control of her powers (which are very different from the beginning too). Numair (My god, my heart stopped for several pages at the end !!) is still crazy and handsome but we also learns more about his past and we we realize that it is really REALLY powerful !!
I also liked the other characters: Kaddar who was great fun, the very wise Lindhall Reed (I really don't go to the right universities ><) and even the emperor =D And I loved seeing Alanna and the other again ><
Well, I began to fear that this series has not romance at all but HAPPILY, there are more and more indications that Numair isn't as indifferent as we thought to the charm of Daine ... ><
I'm SOOOO looking forward to read more =D

Towards the end of the book I started having flashbacks to one of the Dresden novels where Harry animates a Dinosaur and goes on a rampage downtown.
This was kind of like that, with more political factors, a bit of grief and as always, a bit of interference from the gods.
