This was a re-read for me. I really enjoy this book in the series because it is where Daine really starts to realize that the world and its people aren't so black and white. The Stormwings have their reasons for their actions, the Carthaki emperor may be a bad man but he cares deeply for his birds, and the Young Prince may have been raised with ideals that Daine doesn't understand but he cares deeply for his people.
This book is the one in the series where Daine's actual age begins to bother me. As she starts to contemplate romance, those around her are noticeably her elder.

Graphic: Animal cruelty, Slavery, Violence, War
Moderate: Death, Grief, Death of parent, Fire/Fire injury
Minor: Adult/minor relationship
The Carthaki do still have slavery, but it has been outlawed in most other places.
Daine starts to become jealous of Numair's attachments to old flames, and he begins to behave similarly. While there is no clear romance between the two occurring in this book it is the start. At this point Daine is probably around 15 and Numair is somewhere in his mid 20s early 30s I'd guess. While the feelings are returned it's still weird that she's so young.

I thoroughly enjoyed this reread, I’m not sure why it was so difficult for me to get through this book in the past. As per usual with Tamora Pierce books the story was compelling and fast and I absolutely loved all the characters involved.

I think this is my favorite book in this series. Just the right amount of drama, action, and angst.
This was such an excellent quartet, I highly recommend it.
Getting to the heart of main plot arc, Daine and company head to Carthak in a last attempt to make peace. My issues with this series still remain unfortunately. Daine is too powerful and things come to her too easily to make her a very sympathetic character. Unlike the Alanna and PotS series, each book in the Immortals series takes place in a few days, even though there is about a year "time span" between each book. You never get the sense of the character aging and struggling with her talent.
Again, it's a quick read, so if you've already read the first two, you should definitely continue.

3.7 I like getting backstory on Dane's character but this is just not my favorite series by Ms. Pierce. I find the characters interesting but they lack the connection to the reader that you have with Alanna and Kel.
Note: This audio book version was much more enjoyable than the first in this series. I'm glad they stopped/decreased the weird echo microphone portions. I also liked knowing that the author was the narrator. I'd have been content with her reading the whole book but I'm sure that is time consuming.
