carthik is a great piece of world building. i like the way the religious plot plays out, the way the evil emperor is illustrated, the fascination of numair's past hanging in the air, and the way numair and daine's affection for each other develops in the background. but these books are still a disney movie, and daine's deus ex machina with a museum of dinosaurs is ... too predictable? still, this is perhaps the densest, most tightly woven plot in the series?

Nice to see Daine get a little more contact with the gods in this one. Of course they would need to meddle in her life.

This book was tense, and emotional, and the ending was supremely satisfying, but in that "I can tell this isn't the last book in the series" kind of way.

I picked this series back up after reading her latest, Tempest and Slaughter. I read this book quite some time ago and was interested to see the difference in the story with a new understanding of characters past. Numair returns to a land he was exiled from with his student mage, Diana, in tow as part of a treaty delegation. She has wild magic and a small dragon. She heals birds and tries to figure out which persona of the ruler is real. Country intrigue, immortals interference, and lots of wild magic.

Technically this book's villain is a lot more real than the first series from Pierce, but I grew up with Alanna and this just isn't the same. The main character is. so. annoyingly teenage girl.
