I love Lesa Cline-Ransome's writing so I am always excited when a new book comes out. Set in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1930s, this multi-POV narrative gives voice to Lamb and her family. I love stories told via multiple narrators but I wonder how many students will enjoy reading the chapters that are told in adult voices. This is intended for an older audience so maybe that won't be a problem. Lamb is sixteen and is forced to navigate the dangers of befriending a white girl in the Jim Crow South and this friendship contributes to a heartbreaking ending. All of the characters are unforgettable but I haven't been able to stop thinking about Marion. The author's note describes her inspiration for writing this book as well as the real life people this story is based on.

Wow, I was not expecting this ending. The deep story of a young Black girl named Lamb living in the South who befriends a proper, rich white girl named Marnie, which ends up going horribly wrong when Marnie’s older brother George crosses the line with Lamb. An innocent family member pays the ultimate price.

Although this is a work of fiction, it is most definitely based on true events.

Trigger warnings: Sexual abuse/assault, molestation, lynching, death, racism, classism, crude language, etc.

Folks who enjoy reading historical fiction, especially of Black culture and life, and can handle a little heaviness near the end, would really enjoy this book.

(I received this audiobook ALC via NetGalley in return for an honest review. Thank you.)

The first half was really slow but then it sure did pick up with the saddest ending ever that made me sit here and stare at a wall before I could bring myself to read the author’s note and the true story and research behind this book. While it was a slow one, the chapters were short and I got to know everybody and it made the ending hurt even more.
