This book had levels of violence higher than I typically read and was, accordingly, not escapist. (The surprising lack of world-building for a fantasy novel also undercut the escapist nature of this novel, while we’re on the topic….) Overall, a valiant first effort with elements it is important to have represented but another round or two of editing could have helped iron out the inconsistencies in each character’s voice and made for a more compelling read.
Graphic: Blood, Medical trauma, Slavery, Violence, Toxic relationship, Injury/Injury detail, and Gore
Minor: Suicidal thoughts

This is an excellent book with an expansive world. I am very much hoping this becomes a series because I adored the characters and want to see their lives progress! This one is a roller coaster of emotions but the end is so sweet and happy that it makes me smile. An instant favourite!
Graphic: Violence, Sexual content, Cursing, and Slavery
"Slavery" doesn't precisely fit the content of the book, but is the closest approximation. Throughout the book, one of the main characters is threatened with or put under coercion by another character in order to force the main character to do (non-sexual, but often violent) things they refused to do.
