After his father is crucified by the Romans, Daniel swears to get revenge and joins a band of Jewish zealots in the mountains. They claim to be fighting against Rome for the freedom of Israel, but they are really just bandits, even stealing from their own people. Disillusioned, Daniel seeks for answers with Jesus, but Jesus is not a leader who will lead them into battle against the Romans. Jesus teaches that they should love their enemies. Daniel holds onto his hate and urges his fellow villagers to fight. However, he is forced to reexamine his principles when those under his leadership are hurt.
This is an amazing story about people meeting Jesus and finding out for themselves just what He is all about. This story has it all - action , adventure, romance, betrayal, sacrifice, loyalty, and spiritual growth.
I loved every bit of it! The writing is very compelling and emotional as we explore Daniel's relationships with his friends and with his sister. At first he looks on his sister as a burden because she seems to be demon-possessed, but he finds the patience to care for her and Jesus gives him hope that she could be healed.
Daniel has incredible character development as he considers the words of Jesus. He wants to hold onto hatred, but it is making him miserable. When he finally surrenders and allows Jesus to heal him, he finds a freedom and spiritual victory even greater than any victory over Rome could be.
The scenes with Jesus were so powerful! You could really feel the influence He had on the people around Him. His strong presence and intense voice seem to roll over Daniel like a powerful storm, shaking him to the very roots of his soul.

This was way better than I expected! I was assigned this book for a class and didn't read the blurb, just judged it based on the cover. I had no idea it was going to be a semi-religious book and feature Jesus in it.
The Bronze Bow was such a great tale of forgiveness, understanding, and letting go of hate. I wasn't really interested the first half and I didn't really care for Daniel, and then suddenly I was emotionally invested. Elizabeth George Speare did a great job of incorporating Jesus and the apostles without making it seem to preachy or cheesy-- It felt like the insertion of any well known historical figure. Loved the message and having Daniel be at such an unlikable place for a good part of the story really emphasizes how much his heart changes. Would recommend!
Phenomenal. A classic and especially potent in today’s political, cultural, and social climates.
Everyone should read this.
Everyone should read this.
LOVED this! A new family favorite...my boys didn't want the story to end!
