I teach this book to my 7th graders, and I absolutely adore it. I've probably read it 10 times, and I always find something new in it. One of the best biblical fiction I've read. It's so accessible to the kids, but there's a lot for the adult mind to grapple with. Excellent!
What a fantastic book! Beautifully written and set during the life the Jesus Christ, the characters learn the value of love and the consequences of hate. We had so much to discuss and explore as I studied this book with my children.
I loved this story that took place around Jesus. It was nice to get a deeper view of the culture and family life at the times, and see Jesus on the periphery.

Read this for my Newbery Medal challenge. It isn't a story I would choose on my own. Well written, but he subject matter didn't excite me. Probably would have enjoyed it more as a youth though!
Wow! What an excellent book! The intriguing part of my reading this book is why hadn't I read it earlier? Especially considering that I've owned a first edition hardcover for almost 60 years! The author continues building her reputation for creating fascinating characters as Daniel is multi-faceted and you just want to cheer him on as the story builds. I had no idea that there was a book about the ministry of Jesus during the Roman occupation of Judea that should appeal to young readers. So I'd highly recommend this be read by all readers 10 years and older especially those that adhere to the Christian faith as I think they'll find it inspiring. Can't wait to read it to my grandchildren!
I haven’t felt like reading it, so maybe I’ll pick it up later.
A treasure of a book. I read it as it will be part of my son's 5th grade curriculum next year. A surprisingly wonderful read.
