4.23 AVERAGE

I'd previously read the first half of this in trade paperback form last year. It is just as powerful, senseless, and gripping now as it was to me then. The latter half of the volume continues the Negan storyline; it lays the groundwork for things I hope get resolved next volume.

In the year since I last read The Walking Dead, I think my tastes and horizons have expanded a bit. The story is not quite as gripping as I remember it being. I think that is more on me than them, as the characters (of course) haven't aged a day since I last journeyed with them. The constant oppression of the world they live in is less enjoyable and more plain depressing to me right now. I do have the TPB of volume 19 out from the library, so I'll shortly see if the furtherance of the plot piques my interest again or not. It's not that I don't want to continue reading, just that it is a more difficult journey than I had remembered it being.

Good to know Carl can be just as annoying in the comics as he is in the tv show...

I spoke too soon in my last review of the previous Walking Dead installment, shit just got real. Just when I think the gang might be able to catch a break, PSYCH! let the awfulness continue. We know have a new crazy psycho enemy in the picture and he just might be worse than the governor, hard to believe right? Wrong, this guy is plain crazy. We are also introduced to another community, a seemingly good one, albeit crazy. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next installment when it comes out in the fall. I must know what happens!!!

Just when you think things are looking up in the zombie apocalypse...

Good.

4.5 stars.
And then comes Negan.
He lived up to the hype, I’ll say that much.
Establishes Negan and the Saviors as a force to be reckoned with and definitely the biggest threat since the Governor.
The alluded to plot to attack/kill Negan doesn’t make much sense and kinda feels like Kirkman had an “insert plot here” tab at the outset of Rick referring to Negan getting his comeuppance but I’m ok with that.
The last volume felt like a lead up volume, and this one kinda does too. The difference between them is this volume establishes the threat and gives it some context/teeth.
Looking forward to the battle and the aftermath because no matter what, shit’s gonna get worse.

All the stars! My favorite in the series so far!

Yet another engaging and thrilling chapter in this series! In Negan, Kirkman has created his most formidable villain since The Governor. Despite his incredibly dangerous and crass nature, I find Negan to be completely entertaining, often hilarious and hope he sticks around for a while since he adds a welcome new dynamic and presents interesting challenges for Rick and the rest of his group to overcome. I am still reeling from the deaths of two major characters, including one of my favorites in gruesome fashion, but like knowing that no one is safe within this world and that Kirkman pulls no punches.

ENTER THE SAVIORS. Memory-jogging summaries, comparisons to the show, and zombie apocalypse lessons learned...

VOLUME 17: Something To Fear (Issues 97-102).

97: Rick's group encounter members of The Saviors, and after dealing with most of them Rick tells the last one to pass a message on to Negan. Maggie has a reveal. Abraham and Eugene slip outside in hopes to further Eugene's brilliant project idea, not knowing they are watched by a group of men.
98: One of my favorite characters is killed outside the walls as the rest of the Saviors withdraw. Rick's response to the death was saying he didn't know what to do.
99: Rick and a few others drive to the Hilltop Colony, hoping to get help with defeating The Saviors. A group of Saviors plan to attack the Safe-Zone at dawn.
100: Rick's group is ambushed by a large group of Saviors, and Negan. He sets off boundaries by beating another of my favorite characters' heads in with a baseball bat.

I'm only taking away one star because of who they kill in this book--which really isn't a fair reason to take away a star, since the series is still going strong. I don't want to get into any spoilers, but as hard as it might be to believe Negan and the Saviors (bad guys, not a band) are even more intriguing as enemies than previous antagonists. Also, with multiple distant communities interacting with one another, there are that many more opportunities for things to go horribly wrong.
