Eigenlijk wel 4,5 ster. Knap en inventief, qua tijdsbeeld, over voornemens en illusie die anders uitpakken dan je kan voorzien, met de muziek (punk) scene als vertrekpunt. In de vorm, per hoofdstuk een personage, wat uiteindelijk in elkaar klikt in de tijd en samenhang. Met een verrassend hoofdstuk in de vorm van een powerpoint (ook werkend, met muziek online te vinden). En een boek waarbij het eerste en laatste hoofdstuk wel aan elkaar verbonden zijn, maar wat je qua volgorde eigenlijk zelf kan bepalen. Tot slot: prima boek voor een dag ziek in bed ;-/

What I took from this book was a meditation on the flaws inherent in the human condition, the frailty of our moral compass, the impossibility of directness, interpersonal breakdowns caused by our selfishness. The inevitability of this causes sadness and a low level anxiety to permeate the characters in this book, but in a way that is refreshing and honest, like it's okay. This is what being human means. It's not just you. My favorite part of the book is the story of Sasha, who Egan traces from youth to adulthood, in a trajectory that will be familiar to so many Gen Xers, reflectively answering the question "How did we get here?" Definitely worth the read.

Such a clever novel - reading it is like piecing together a jigsaw, revealing a complex tapestry of human connection. Amazing author - can't wait to read more of her work.

I have to admit upfront that the only reason that I read this was that it fulfilled part of a reading challenge and was available at my local library. It was a bonus that it was part of the goodreads bookclub.
I really did not like the first couple of chapters and almost gave up. I started to enjoy the book only from chapter 4. This was probably one of my favourite chapters. I liked the setting and the way you found out what was going to happen to a certain character during the rest of their life. Almost like the narrator started rambling and then had to pull themselves back to the storyline.
Another favourite chapter was the powerpoint one. I wondered exactly how it would convey the story but it did extremely well. It is also a very interesting way of doing a diary.
My interest in the book varied throughout from actually enjoying it, through tolerating it all the way through to hating it. It is definitely not a book that I would have chosen myself and it certainly did not live up to the quotes that are written all over my copy of the book. Moving and life enhancing it was not.
