This is definitely one that I'll have to read/ listen to multiple times to pick up all the details. I loved this book and saw a lot of real world parallels in it.

This is the first Terry Pratchett book that I've read; Small Gods came recommended as a great starting point.

It took me a long time to adjust to the author's narrative. Once I was past that hurdle, about half way through the book, I began to think this was an okay read.

I can understand how people could love this book, there's obviously a lot of thought behind the story and the humour reminds me of Monty Python, but unfortunately I'm not a fan. I only ever felt this was an OK read.
adventurous funny hopeful lighthearted fast-paced

Incredibly funny yet also thought provoking to those (un)believers in gods and -isms.

(3.5)

Potentially a blasphemous opinion here - but despite having some of the funniest moments and cleverest ideas I've seen in Discworld so far (after 8 books), I just didn't love this one as much as it was hyped up to be!

Think Going Postal is the better starting point than this, sorry Small Gods-heads

I’ve been waiting to write this review because it’s my first Terry Pratchett book. The contents of this novel gave me a lot to chew on and I wanted my review to touch on everything that made it so spectacular. I’ll do my best to tell you why Small Gods is worth your attention.

Writing a book that is witty is hard. It’s a skill that most authors don’t attempt. Terry, however, has me convinced that he is the master (or he was just born with some kind of innate ability). From beginning to end, Small Gods is choked full of:
-Very literal and downright hilarious naming of characters
-Metaphors that make you laugh
-Well crafted religious organizations that feel real
-Jokes and jabs that don’t interfere with the storytelling
-Morals and lessons that apply to the real world that aren’t pretentious

Disworld has been added to my radar. It should be on yours too.

It took a while to build the world and characters and for the plot to get going, but after it did, it was a fairly interesting book. “Ambi-sinistrous” was probably my favorite joke of the book but I got a good dose of Terry Pratchett’s wit and humour here. I think I shall have to pick up one of his series instead of a stand alone book at some point.
