This book made me laugh, quite a few times, which is a rare thing for me. It was quite silly in it's absurdity and I thoroughly enjoyed it's take on gods and their power.

I didn't realize it was the 13th book in a series?! I suppose I have to start at book one, now.

Wow. Even if the other 40 books in the Discworld series were garbage, it would have been worth it just to read this one book.

If you've read some of my other reviews of Discworld books, you know that I absolutely do not think that the series was garbage - I am in love with it (and will be eternally grateful to my friend that convinced me to give the series another chance).

This book. This is the book where it all came together. There were other excellent books in the series (and, to be honest, some that were a slog to make it through); however, this is the book that made reading all of the other ones worth it.

For traditions sake, here are my non-surprising sub-ratings:
Characters: 5*
Universe: 5*
Plot: 5*

In this book, more than any of the others in the series so far, the development of the characters, the universe, and the plot came together in a one book series. Yes, it definitely helps to have read some of the other books first to have a feel for the universe of the series, but this one does not rely nearly as heavily on the other books (although if you've read the others, there are some subtle NODS TO SOME OF MY FAVORITES and how they operate).

The characters grow within this one book. They learn. They impact the world and others around them. The universe is consistent and impacts the story. The plot - especially after reading [b:Moving Pictures|34510|Moving Pictures (Discworld, #10; Industrial Revolution, #1)|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1320456553s/34510.jpg|1229354] - is enjoyable. There is a beginning, a middle, and an end and it is easy to follow the story lines.

This is a book that I'll be returning to multiple times. As always, the book is very quotable:
Gravity is a habit that is hard to shake off.

History has to be observed. Otherwise it’s not history. It’s just…well, things happening one after another.

the master of the music, had described Brutha’s voice as putting him in mind of a disappointed vulture arriving too late at the dead donkey.

Many feel they are called to the priesthood, but what they really hear is an inner voice saying, “It’s indoor work with no heavy lifting, do you want to be a plowman like your father?”

Om, bumping along in Brutha’s pack, began to feel the acute depression that steals over every realist in the presence of an optimist.

Last night there seemed to be a chance. Anything was possible last night. That was the trouble with last nights. They were always followed by this mornings.

It was a million-to-one chance, with any luck.

Men should die for lies. But the truth is too precious to die for.

You can die for your country or your people or your family, but for a god you should live fully and busily, every day of a long life.”

“...he’s carrying a dead body, sir.” “On a battlefield? It’s not bring-your-own, you know.”

i actually have not even finished this, i still have about ten pages, but i’m so unmotivated to read them that i wanted to get my rating and review out of the way first. i don’t understand the love for this book! after witches abroad, it was a massive disappointment for me. nowhere near as funny, and felt like it tried too hard. i think i agreed with the main points the author was making, but i still strongly disliked the book. wish i could have enjoyed this book as much as other people seem to. i don’t even care what the ending is.
