At first I was nervous the book would be too scary (im a wimp) for me, but I really liked it! The characters were interesting and the imagery was very good. It was definitely crass/ gross at times. I felt like I could hear the characters talk by the way it was written.
A 4.5 star book. One you can't stop reading and marvel at all the depravity and hilarity.

Somehow Donald Ray Pollock was able to toss in even more disgusting things than in his first book. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying another book about sad, disturbing lives in Ohio in 1917. This one took me a while to get into, but it was good and the end had me tearing up for the few good characters. Even with all the depressing and disgusting things he writes, he at least gives some people a happy ending.
I love his writing style with the short chapters, lots of storylines, and having them intertwine. I like that I get a little backstory into everyone, like a store clerk who rings them up once. Everyone gets a storyline, even for a few paragraphs. He can’t let you read about someone and think they might be normal, has to let you know they’re also disturbing or have a depressed life. He also somehow makes the deaths seam peaceful, the last thoughts of the person before they pass.
The review on the back from the Wall Street journal had me laughing because it was perfect: “A beach read to enjoy on the shore of a lake of fire”

I haven't read much (if any) Southern Gothic fiction before, and it's definitely just not for me.

THIS IS NOT BEACH READING UNLESS BY BEACH YOU MEAN CEMETERY AND BY READING YOU MEAN SHOVELING.
This is tough read. Lots of violence. Lots of depravity. Hardly any women at all, which is my only real complaint. It is not going to be everyone's cuppa. But it's a beautiful piece of work with an ending that felt right and redeeming. Impressive talent on display.
