A great first book to kick off a series, very engaging from the start. The love triangle had so much potential, but I feel like it wasn’t explored enough, though I suppose there’s still plenty of time in the series left to flesh it out. If someone only wants to read this book for the romance, they’d be disappointed, since not much happens aside from like two scenes with just a kiss. Overall, this book does a great job setting up a really dynamic and interesting plot web for the next few books to explore. I’m already starting the next one!

I liked this book! It was entertaining & really easy to read. I will say that I never really expected Nehemiah to have anything to do with the murders & I suspected it was Cain the entire time. I’m not sure if that aspect was supposed to be a plot twist but if so, it was a little disappointing that it was that obvious. Regardless, I enjoyed this book!

Some of the romantic and playful interests are a bit juvenile and the treatment of royalty is not entirely expected, but the relationships formed and the adventure is carefully placed in short chapters, making much of it easily digestible.

Updated review (March 2024):

This was my lowest ranked SJM book on my first read, and while it is staying in place (purely because everything else is SO MUCH BETTER), I definitely appreciated it more the second time around. ToG Dorian and Chaol are frankly underrated, imo, and Nehemia grew on me here too. I’ve never been a huge rereader, but I’m starting to think that for SJM it is almost crucial—there are just so many small details that you only pick up with a second look.

Lastly, just screaming this from the rooftops one more time…READ THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE FIRST. I intentionally tallied and every SINGLE major reveal from that is spoiled if you start with this book instead. It truly boggles my mind that anyone could advocate a different reading order for first time readers (and yes, I am directing this towards SJM herself as well).

Original review (March 2023):

Rating: 4/5 stars.

Really good but honestly not great? If you compare it to the later books this is much slower and harder to get into. But it’s still very fun, and VERY worth it for what will come.

This book slapped! There was so much going on, and the storytelling was so expertly crafted. I loved getting to learn about these characters, especially our main character, and learn more about the world they inhabit. I can't believe this is the first book in a series and that it only goes up from here--this was already so good! Anyways, you can all call me the fool for not reading this sooner, I won't mind because you'd be right. I'm not a big fantasy person usually, but this world is very easily understandable and although it takes place in a different world and there's magic, I never felt really lost in understanding the dynamics of the world (perhaps because it mirrors our own so well re: colonization (yikes)). I could say a lot more, but I still need to organize my thoughts honestly--soo much happened that there's a lot to consider. Excited for the next one!
