Thought this book was pretty good for a mystery book, the only thing that irked me was the many mentions of ladies BMI. It was often enough that it made me wonder about the author.

Good detective story set in Minneapolis. Excellent descriptions of the locations made it so I could picture every turn of the car as this murder was investigated. I didn't guess the culprit, but the ending made sense. I wish there had been less profanity; otherwise a very enjoyable book.

I loved this book at first because I live in the Twin Cities and it was fun to have first-hand knowledge of the places Nils Shapiro is investigating, living, eating, drinking, driving, etc. Then I loved it because Nils Shapiro is hilarious. And finally I loved it because this is a good story - the mystery hooked me, the characters were engaging and Nils is fun to hang out with.

This is an engaging murder mystery set in the Minneapolis, MN metro area. The author sets up a clever initial premise, and has clearly lived in the area, so it's fun to recognize many of the landmarks and social attitudes. The writer has a very engaging voice, and it keeps the story moving forward at an easy pace. There's a good deal of characterization and clever wordplay, which I enjoyed. There's some nastiness, but overall it's a nice, light read. I'll look for the second book in the series.

First book in the series, Nils Shapiro is a PI asked to help on a murder of a woman in Edina, MN. Nils is divorced from his wife, and is trying to find fulfillment in a loving relationship. As he delves into the mystery of this woman's murder, who is covered with dust, he is reunited with some childhood friends. He uncovers a secret relationship that the deceased, Maggie Somerville, had with a young Somali American woman. He also works to find the real killer, although there are some red herrings thrown in along the way.
I enjoyed this first book, and will look for the next in the series.

I love the tone of this story. The main character is flawed and funny and really smart in an understated way. It reminds me of Sue Grafton’s alphabet books. I will definitely continue in this series. I’m glad I happened upon it.

Ehh. I didn't like the main character. Moved too slow to keep my interest.

Now I've listened to/read all the Matt Goldman books--both the Nils Shapiro series & the touching standalone Carolina Moonset. Hope he writes fast to complete the next one!
