As someone who loved The Witch's Heart, I had high hopes for this. It unfortunately doesn't come close to how much I loved the author's previous work, but I still really enjoyed it. Love that one character is explicitly demi-sexual with stating how they can't do intimacy without really knowing someone first (love the ace/aro rep) and one character is trans. Overall loved the story and the little twists/reveals. The main characters are good as well even though they frustrated me at times throughout. Many of the minor characters were great though.
I will say there are a lot of slow spots for me and I didn't have the same intense emotions reading it as the authors previous book, and those are big reasons it wasn't a 5star read like The Witch's Heart for me. I will still totally look forward to any books or work this author does in the future!
Check trigger/content warnings although nothing was super graphic stuff was still detailed and mentioned.

This book was great! At first I was worried it was going to be a bit slow, with too many characters, but it wasn't. The book picked up right away and I was never bored. I used to really enjoy the show Vikings, and the cultural elements in this were vivid to me as I could already picture so many aspects of Nordic life.

The magic system and world building were great, and I was really invested in the characters' relationships, and surprise representation I wasn't expecting.

After also loving The Witch's Heart by this author, I think they've become an auto-read for me now.

The Viking Age setting really comes alive. Halfway through, I didn't like the book - all the terrible decisions being made were bothering me. But by the end it picked up again and carried the story through.

Difficult to finish. The characters are annoying and cringe. The dialogue is bad. The story is incredibly slow and draggy. The plot was pretty shallow and it seemed like the characters had no interest in finding Signy because they were each preoccupied with their love lives.

i finished this book simply to say i gave it a fair chance, up until the very end, to win me over. it didn’t.

the historical inaccuracies are numerous and glaring. the writing itself is juvenile and in no way reflects the time period or its setting; everyone in this book talks like teenagers from a CW tv show— any CW tv show.  the main character of Gunnhild is selfish,  contemptuous, petulant, and for a nearly thirty year old woman, infuriatingly childish. Oddny is better, in that she’s at least likable, but her characterization is far too bland to be compelling.

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this better than Genevieve Gornichec's previous novel, The Witch's Heart, likely because it was less of a straightforward mythology retelling and more of Gornichec's own creation. The dialogue is also stronger and less awkward. One aspect from The Witch's Heart that I was happy to see preserved here, however, is how much agency our women protagonists have--they're incredibly strong, inspiration, smart, and bitingly funny in their wit. There's also a trans character (possible spoiler?) that ends up having a major role in the story.
