I think often of the scene with Ramona and the toothpaste. I do not know why.

I just love Ramona and the whole Quimby family. Ramona is such a realistic kid and the family's dynamics are so genuine, funny, and loving. I first read this book when I was about Ramona's age ("7 1/2 right now") and decades later it still makes me laugh and feel warm and fuzzy inside. Beverly Cleary was such a special writer. I can't wait to give this series to my niece some day.

My son says this was better than Ramona and her father. My daughter says Ramona is too old now

It wasn’t very interesting to me. I prefer a more nuanced story with political intrigue or multiple spacecraft. Not really my thing. My kids liked it ok.

Beverly Cleary must have been my favorite author when I was eight. Finally I found characters that I related too! An author that understood what it was like to be a real child in the real world. In this book, (how come Ramona gets to stay so young) Ramona is looking for her mother to cherish her, "how no one ever said she was her mother's girl and how she wanted her mother to love her like a little rabbit and how somehow all these feelings had led to pretending to be a fireman." (and wearing her PJ/s under her clothes to school) p 170 Finally "her mother has said the words she had longed to hear. Her mother could not get along without her. She felt warm and safe and comforted and oh, how good her mother smelled, so clean and sweet like flowers. Better than any mother in the whole world."

From the earlier Ramona books, I thought she was closer to her mother; I guess because that's who she spent time with on her half days of kindergarten. Now her mother has gone back to work and Ramona misses the time they spent together. She feels like her mother prefers Beezus. After not getting along with her new teachers, Ramona starts to think that no one likes her!

This book accurately captures the highs and lows of childhood, as Cleary always does. It seemed more light-hearted than Ramona and Her Father. I don't know if that was done on purpose - a more emotionally involved book followed by something lighter, or if it's just how I'm perceiving things since Ramona and Her Father was the first book I read after Cleary's death. Either way, it's a fun story that captures Ramona's personality in an engaging way for readers.
