I can see why my 10 yr.old liked this book. It has adventure with a suspensful chills appropriate to that age group. It kinds of reminds me of The Wizard of Oz... but in a creepy Nightmare Before Christmas way.

It seems that most of the other reviews are from people out of the intended audience. And while I agree that a great book should be able to be read by anyone, this book needs a review from someone that can better relate to the characters.
I read this book when I was 12. I finished the first book in 2 days, and finished the entire series in 2 weeks. I loved this books. I still live these books. I had no friends (I actually did have a couple friends, but I felt like I had no friends) and I was so happy to read a book that had a pet as a side kick (like I did) instead of a best friend. I identified with the character, and I wanted to fall through a lake too and join her. The characters she meets later are the people I wanted to be friends with.
More than that, the plot was incredible. It was different from most other books I'd read. It was a bit scary, but no more than a Halloween movie (the kid's ones!).
So maybe I wouldn't suggest this book to everyone. I wouldn't suggest it to an adult (although they will most likely enjoy it, but they won't have the same connection). I wouldn't suggest it to a young kid (because it is slightly scary). But any kids going through that awkward phase of 9-13, well this book will be perfect for them and could change their outlook.

I read this because my son and a passel of his 4th-grade guy friends are really into this series. The lead is a girl, which is cool that boys like it. But the plot is just a quest -- and one that is dull, imho. The stories take place in the after world with ghosts and specters and all sorts of spooky things May overcomes.
