Okay I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected.

When I started this book I hated Simon Hunt. I thought I was going to dnf this because of how much I hated him. Reader, I fell in love with him.

I loved the plot of this. I love a historical romance where the majority of time is spent at a house party so this really hit the spot for me.

I also loved the characters. Simon and Annabelle became everything to me but I also love the other wallflowers so much. I love the portrayal of female friendship in this. I cannot wait to read the other girls books.

The writing was so fun. The vibes were immaculate.

I especially appreciate that there was no dumb third act conflict. I liked that we got a substantial glimpse into married life for Simon and Annabelle. I do think the plot dragged a little after they got married but the ending saved it for me.

A good time. Very enjoyable.

I loved this historical romance. The characters were well developed and the plot was irresistible. I couldn't put this book down and wound up finishing it in 2 days. She is fast becoming one of my favorite authors!

Re-read
I read this series more than 10 years ago and it still holds up. I can see why this is one of my favorite historical romances.

Apart from Bridgerton, I don't read a lot of romance novels. I was initially hesitant about reading this book because of its theme of a woman becoming a mistress, but I decided to give this book a chance.

After reading a few chapters, I realized that the term "mistress" in this context did not mean involvement with a married man, but rather a prostitute, with married or unmarried man. The plot itself was unappealing from the start, so I had low expectations. The characters, particularly Annabelle's shallowness and Simon's unsettling stalker-like traits, failed to resonate with me. My lack of connection to the characters and story continued throughout, but I must say that the book's good writing allowed me to finish reading the whole book.

I am surprised at how many positive reviews this book has received. I personally don't recommend this book, but you're welcome to form your own opinion if you choose to read it.
