I got to SPQR when looking for a follow up read after 'I, Claudius', some broader and didactic overview about Classic Rome and I found Mary Beard wandering around GR.
It is definitely a great book for beginners like myself.
I loved its freshness, its focus on the first growth period of the Empire and its intention of describing Roman times from different angles, not only its politics

If you are a student, interested our evan an historian out side of classical Rome you should read this book! I canot recomend it enough evan if i try! A great resume of history of Rome from its foundation until the change from Rome to Constantinople, but not just history of the elits but also of the proletarians and slaves.
Quer a pessoa seja estudante, interessado ou até alguém que lide com história fora da área de clássicas devia ler este livro, não consigo recomendar mais do que isto, se a pessoa for fan de Roma não pode perder! Este é um óptimo resumo do Império Romano desde a fundação até ao segundo século da Era Comum, e sendo que não se lida apenas com a história de elites mas também de proletários e escravos.
