There is a whole chapter about a tarantula. As an arachnophobia, I simply cannot.

This set of memoirs is both beautiful on the outside and inside. I appreciate that Sy Montgomery was truly vulnerable and wore her heart on her sleeve throughout. She shared her story and the stories of so many who can not. This book really struck a chord with me as a fellow animal lover. It helped shine some light on the things we as human beings take for granted and the things we can glean from the vibrant world around us. I will definitely be reading more by this author! The red eyes and runny nose were so worth it.

What a beautiful, sweet and oh-so-human book.

It’s a pretty good book that definitely goes deeper into the nonhuman perspective than many of its ilk, which pleases me. I always felt more animal than human and the way Sy described her childhood and how she saw herself and the world around her was very on point as someone who also grew up with dogs and other animals. All in all, a nice read and does not get too long winded or overstay its welcome.

I’ve always admired Sy’s writing and incredible approach to the natural world and all its wonderful beings that inhabit it. This book is no different! I enjoyed reading this aloud with my 11 1/2 year old daughter. The 13 animals were so sweet and it made me want to read a few of her other books. I’ve only read Soul of an Octopus so Octavia’s story was familiar. Be prepared to bawl, though the grief and depression within are processed through love and devotion. We can learn so much from animals. As a vegan, it reinforces my decision not to eat them. Would highly recommend this book!

Lovely! Sy Montgomery uses beautiful and evocative language to share some of her personal life experiences and lessons she has learned from her relationships with animals. Her stories of 13 creatures touched my soul, and I'm left with feelings of love, joy, grief, longing, wonder, and gratitude. I'd never heard of Sy Montgomery until I discovered this memoir, and now I'm eager to read some of her other books.

So touching, the relationships that we have with all of Earth's charming creatures. Sy Montgomery has a beautiful way of seeing and writing about animals.

For such a short read, it has changed me.
