Sy Montgomery’s nature writing is not for those with a dispassionate interest in zoology. It’s for sentimental vegetarians that squeal when they spot a groundhog (that’s not a dig, that’s me). This wasn’t as good as The Soul of an Octopus, but it was very cute.

This was short and sweet, but saccharine at times and didn’t really address “being a good creature.”

What an interesting way to write a memoir! If you’re an animal lover, but not super into nonfiction like me, this is a great place to start your NF journey! there was a lot more animal facts than I thought there was gonna be which made the pacing/flow of reading a bit weird for me, but overall all the little stories were fun and even emotional!

For a non-fiction book, not my usual, this book held my attention. It was relatable and inspiring and I enjoyed the prose and way it was written

DNF. If you REALLY like animals this might be your jam but it’s not for me. If you know me you might not be surprised that I quit on the 2nd Chapter, Emus....

A beautiful way to write about the author’s life: through the animals that have taught, entertained, and loved. I wasn’t prepared to read about the passing of so many beloved animals, but that’s to be expected (even if it breaks my heart to think of losing my sweet pup). I loved the profound way Sy has been taught by animals in her life. This book makes me want to cherish the creatures around me all the more.
