Really interesting idea and a great narrative voice, but the book escalated too quickly, there's wasn't enough time to get attached to the characters and their problems.

The synopsis comparison to Atwood and Butler does this book dirty, as I cannot help but think how this book falls short of their work. It’s a great premise, but dystopia and social critique works best when it’s evenly layered into the story. The rules about witches seemed arbitrary and it was jarring to switch from complex nuances of relationship to tangents about human rights. Everything said was true, but it could have been blended better. Also when a magic system is introduced I want to know how it works, and I was dissatisfied with the inconsistencies.

I did enjoy the rumination on relationships between jo and her mom, friends, and lovers, something I normally don’t. It was real and so believable

Very well written. There were several points at the end where I felt the story could have ended. Loved the character development and the exploration of the complex parental relationships.

Conceptually this book has a great premise, but it falls flat in execution. The world-building surrounding how witches, magic, and various other creatures that randomly appeared throughout the novel just wasn't extensive enough and it made its co-existence with modern American society feel clunky. In an effort to be profound with social commentary, it became to heavy-handed and on the nose violating the trust the author has in the reader to read between the lines. I felt the writing style was disjointed and made the pacing feel very odd. Overall, I can appreciate the points the author was trying to make but don't think it came together in a way that felt meaningful.
