I've heard so much about Neil Gaiman and watched the show based on another one of his novels, Angels and Demons, but I had never read a books of his until now.

I enjoyed this, but I feel like I need to reread it. It comes of as reality - mixed with a child's imagination- mixed with fantasy. Sometimes I was lost, but I think it was an honest portrayal of what a child can take in and interpret differently from an adult.

Gaiman did a wonderful job portraying the narrator's adventures with Lettie. It reminded me strongly of playing make-believe as a kid, oh to go back there would be lovely.

TO be fair, I did not finish this book. I got about 105 pages in to it and I wasn't seeing what the big deal was about so I quit. Too many other books to read and this one was just way too out of my realm... part fantasy, part suspense, part weird! Wasn't feelin' it - sorry!

This is the first book I've read by Neil Gaiman. Not what I expected...very strange/different.

nice story...

Weird. Creepy. Strange. Curious. I do enjoy a good Gaiman story. One of those that I don’t know what exactly is going on. But it’s ok, I am along for the ride and enjoying it

Magical realism with elements of horror. Pretty much the first "horror" novel I've read, although fortunately for me, that wasn't the primary genre of this book. I really enjoyed the Hempstock family and their secrets and powers, and being brought along to another world with them. Really creative and immersive, you really get into the mindset of the 7 year-old main character and feel scared for him trying to navigate the tough situations he finds himself in. I would've loved some more explanations regarding the different creatures and powers we encounter, but perhaps leaving those out is part of the magic. This was my first Gaiman novel and I'm looking forward to reading some of his other works soon.

How does Neil Gaiman do it? HOW? I guess ours is not to reason why, ours is to read in one sitting. Make sure you have a few hours free for this one. The master strikes again.

OUTSTANDING!
