I got this book as part of my book of the month package. It was a fantastic read, especially for a book that i got for free and happened to be written by one of my favorite authors. I love the imagery of the maiden, the mother, and the crone and how Gaiman really made the mythology intermingle with the fairy tale qualities of the story. It is a moving coming of age novel and a quaint, easy read if you are looking for a book to get you through a long flight or car ride on your summer vacation.
I’m honestly speechless.
Normally this isn’t my usual genre, but something drew me into reading it and I’m so glad I did. It was wonderful, beautifully written with depth of truth and wonders. This book has earned a special place in my heart.
Neil Gaiman played with the concept of two realities in a way that’s so poetically and unique. I can’t find better words to describe the feeling that this book has left me with, read it and you’ll understand.

“The truth is, there aren’t any grown-ups. Not one, in the whole wide world.”
a fantasy story about a young boy who likes books more than people? Unfortunately I simply cannot relate to that at all, not one bit, nope…
But really, it’s just the best and Gaiman makes this shit look easy. Love the approach to folklore that is separated from classical myth just enough so that you’re hanging onto each new description, because that’s all you have to work with. Also has time for that particular Guillermo del Toro streak of “monsters have feelings too,” which I always adore.

Feels like a book written for adults who want to re-experience the feeling of being a child, with the wonder, imagination and helplessness that came along with it

I don't think I was the right audience for this book. I enjoyed the themes of childhood and how they think about adults, how the water and magic were both dangerous and lifegiving depending, the thought that no one looks like they do on the inside, and how memory is only so effective. I just didn't find myself yearning to read it. The writing and literary devices were both good and added to the whimsy of it. I hope in the end both the main characters decide it WAS worth it!
