4 stars because while it has a strong start and a terrifying second act, it loses steam right after the climax. You feel obligated to finish the last 40 pages because you've already made it this far, but it could've ended after Mrs Hempstock closed that bloody portal.

very icky if you look into the news about Gaiman... not great.
I understand that it can be quite a beautiful story if it wasn't for the author being a terrible human being.
the art is really pretty tho

This book follows the story of a man (who is never named) when he visits his childhood home where he spends time remembering his childhood. That's all I can really say about the plot. This book was strange, slightly terrifying and magical. I feel Neil Gaiman did a really good job writing from the point of view of a child. However, while I enjoyed this it didn't blow me away.
Neil Gaiman is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. His ability to write such detailed worlds and characters to move about within them are amazing.
This was the first book I have read in a while that I just couldn’t put down and had to find out what happened next.
I would love to read more about the Hempstocks as their little farmhouse domain was by far the most interesting part of this book and I need to know more.

Dark amazing fairy tale of childhood and what we know and what we believe. Read in one sitting since it is the kind of story you can't walk away from.
I loved the feel of this book. Very mysterious and ethereal and magical. It was suspenseful and really sucked me in. I felt like I was the boy in the story. It definitely left an impression on me.

Similar to my review of Coraline, it just makes me sick and sad to know the author is a piece of shit, because this book was such a profound read for me. Ah, well.
