Been wanting to read this book. I knew it was sapphic but it's a lot less subtle than I thought it would be! Loved the tension between the characters. Ending is a little disappointing but the buildup was pretty good.

Pretty sure the author wrote this to demonize women's sexuality and lesbianism in the 1800s, then modern day queers turned it around and said "Carmilla is the iconic hot lesbian vampire representation we needed" and for that alone this was a good read

this book is famous for predating Dracula by some two decades. there is very gay undertones. but not in a progressive way. it was kind of written as a shocking, look at this evil lesbian kind of way. but it is public domain now. so I'm looking forward to reading some other adaptions that really take the lgbtq+ motifs to a higher level. My copy is barely under 160 pages so it's an easy read, some pages might need to be reread because of the old dialect. this book was written between 1871 and 1872 for a magazine, so the language is a little hard to understand, but it's still a fun and easy read to turn your brain off to.
