After sifting through an old journal, I found one of my first steps into writing book reviews and it was for this novel.
"...I also finished listening to The Princess and Curdie that was on cassette. It was really good. I like the author's style of writing. His name is George McDonald I believe. But I am not positive on if it is MacDonald or McDonald. Either one, I think I shall call him McDonald. Which I believe is correct. In this tale of a princess of the name Irene, and a miner boy of the name Curdie go off in an adventure. Or an adventure found them. First they have to stop the plot of taking the throne, by the evil Goblins. After that in the second Curdie and Princess Irene have to save Irene's Father's kingdom from it being taken over by the disobedient people of the castle. These books were a pleasure to listen to."

A very interesting read. I liked it more for the author style than the contents, but that wasn't so bad either.
The beginning was irritating because there was nothing going on, and I could feel the author trying to fill in the void. He would make strange remarks, and go off on tangents. He would give us his person opinion on different subjects. Nothing pertaining to the plot.
When the plot picked up, and became interesting, I enjoyed the personal touch of the narration a lot more.
Suddenly, we were in the same room. He was telling a story and adding bits of flavor to it. Nothing over the top, like in the beginning. Little things here and there. Keeping the vocabulary simple but strong. Short and sweet to keep the story moving but the atmosphere rich.
The plot itself was simple. I enjoyed the sneaking around and eavesdropping. I thought those were the best, and most tense, scenes. The grandmother scenes were strange but great as well. Full of wonder, while the goblin scene were full of tension.
The characters were short and sweet. They were each memorable. The nanny/ nurse who was anxious about her job. The king who was quiet and gentle. The princess who was kind of annoying, but then again she's young and nobody takes her seriously. The miner who wants to save the town. The goblin royal family and their toes, and the magical grandmother, who seemed creepy at time. Oh, and the miner's mother who was nice.
I'm surprised I remember so many characters. But they were all interesting and different. And they all had scenes where their personality stood out.
It was a good read.
I wish the plot was a little more involved. And the beginning was more interesting. And there were more characters. Besides that it was great

We started this as an accompaniment to our medieval history unit for 2nd grade. I read each chapter aloud. It was a good story, and I'm glad we could read this classic work. I didn't care for the way the story was narrated, with the author speaking of himself from time to time, but my daughter didn't seem to mind. This book ended up taking us much longer than anticipated and we ended up reading it off and on throughout it summer break to complete it.

Listened to the audio book and couldn't get through it. Even though it is a childrens book it was rather boring
Very early fantasy by the author that went on to inspire and mentor C.S.Lewis.
The religious analogies in this book are about as subtle as they are in the Narnia books, and the books lack the elegance of E. Nesbit, but it is clear to see what inspired Tolkien, Lewis and others in this book.

Cute and well written, but not something I will probably reread.
A fun, sweet little old-fashioned fairy tale. Some nice moments of wonder and bits of allegory. Extra bonus: loving, supportive parents in a children's fantasy novel. I'm not sure why Curdie's parents let him investigate goblins alone for months, but in every other way they were fantastic and all other parents in fantasy books should take notes.
