I'm not sure why I never read this one as a child, for it is exactly the sort of book I would have loved. It drags on in a few places, but for the most part is a lovely magical tale of bravery & trust.

My boys adored this book! They continually asked me to read more and more of it until we finished it!

Fun to revisit a childhood favorite. The section on being unable to see certain realities until mature remains an interesting thought.

As usual, GM delivers a delightful little Victorian fairy tale with its own special charm. I couldn’t believe how many ideas and events were in this story which later appear (modified, of course) in Tolkien and Lewis works... but really I shouldn’t have been surprised given how much they loved MacDonald.
Also, I enjoyed how Irene and Curdie both had a chance to be the rescuer at different parts of the tale. This princess has a quite lot of spunk!

2.5 stars. I just couldn't stand the characters.

I love MacDonald. LOVELY writing, beautiful imagery. This was the fairytale missing from my childhood.

Not my favourite George MacDonald.
