Jill did an amazing job of capturing the harm that organized religion has inflicted on her family while holding such grace and love for everyone involved.

As someone who has lived under a family that idolized the Duggar lifestyle, this was both hard and relieving to listen to and understand more thoroughly why my parents made the decisions that they did.

I never watched the Duggars, so I started this book knowing nothing about them except that they were conservative Christian, had a lot of kids, and that Josh had been charged with SA and found with CP recently.
I really enjoyed this book a lot. It is incredibly difficult to stand up for yourself and enforce boundaries with a parent. I'm sure it is even more difficult when you have your parents and 18 siblings who don't agree with those boundaries (or at least can't speak out in support). The easy thing is to just go along with things, keep the peace, and not rock the boat. Jill made the difficult decision to rock the boat, enforce her boundaries, and push for what she felt was fair. She prioritized her peace above the family's (her dads), and had very little support, only her husband. That takes a lot of strength, and that is very admirable.

Jill ate and left no crumbs. This book was wonderfully written and beautifully narrated. You can feel the trama she went through, even if you haven't dealt with religious trauma, you feel her pain and struggle.

We’ve heard countless stories of the damage of putting kids on television or in movies (Drew Barrymore, Macaulay Culkin, Jeanette McCurdy, etc.), yet the practice continues today, especially through social media “influencers.” When is enough…enough?

While I can see why people feel like she wasn’t harsh enough, it gave me hope that the road I am on is right. We can appreciate the past while also acknowledging the bad and holding the people accountable. Relationships are complicated.
