dark fast-paced

Undoubtedly my favorite Saunders work of all time. I think about Ghoul everyday…
challenging medium-paced

4.5 — a timely collection of stories about restraining oneself from doing the right thing to blend in / doing the “right thing” with deadly consequences. I got some good giggles out of it + love the speculative fiction blend of the title story

I enjoyed most of the stories. It took a few pages to really understand what each was about and that was hard to repeat so frequently throughout the book, making it take a little longer to read than I expected. Overall I wanted to know more about the characters in the stories, particularly those with memory erasure, so I give it 3 stars.

I’m a sucker for short stories, and George Saunders does them like no one else. His ability to look out so deeply and truly from such a menagerie of minds, without pretentiousness, is unrivaled. I haven’t loved all of his works, but this one I certainly did.
