Death is coming for us all, but life goes on until then.

“Liberation Day,” The Mom of Bold Action,” and “Ghoul” are standouts among this pack.

Though “Elliott Spencer” has the best single line:

After the rave reviews, I was looking forward to this. Although it is a clever book and creatively done, it is too dark and cynical for me to enjoy reading - I felt assaulted as I read it. Others might not be so sensitive. But it was so dark and depressing for me, I could finish the last stories.

As always with short story collections, some better than others! Liked liberation day (but similar to semplica girl diaries), a thing at work, and ghoul best.

This is my first George Saunders collection and I honestly have no idea how I feel about it as a whole. There were some stories I liked, others that left me confused and wanting more, and some I just didn’t care about. I wish the stories had seemed connected and kept looking for that, though that’s on me because nothing in the description mentioned it. The audio version was done very well and I felt like the narrators added a lot to the stories.

I liked “Liberation Day” though I was super confused through a bunch of it. This, “Ghoul,” and “Elliott Spencer” stand out as being particularly unique. I thought “Love Letter” felt a little too close to being real and it was a bit unnerving. I liked “The Mom of Bold Action” and thought the narration was great.

Having read this, I might read more of Saunders. I’m not a big short story reader, but it’s good to branch out from time to time.

fiction is great because sometimes a writer is put on this earth to tackle such themes as “the mysteries of catholicism” or “the capriciousness of memory,” and sometimes they were put here to write—beautifully, painfully—about mindwipe human slavery

honestly a lot of his stories are really enjoyable to read & then kind of forgettable later. a lot of them blend together. that does make them nice rereads though.

a thing at work was my favorite, followed by ghoul and sparrow. liberation day might have actually been my least favorite. as always, big fan of his Themes and Vernacular and Characterization. 4 stars.
