Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for this ARC.

Saunders is just. so. good. at this, at twisting the everyday into the slightly off, exposing the things that make us human in all our flaws and foibles. It's all near future where something's gone slightly off the rails. The opening (title) story in this collection is worth the rating alone, but all of these pieces (a few of which appeared in the New Yorker the last few years like advance singles for this eventual album) work fantastically in dialogue with each other. I just like the way Saunders writes, and I'm looking forward to see what comes next.

Really weird collection, but I enjoyed most stories. I appreciate the loose themes (freedom/oppression) set in both the "real" world and in some stranger imagined worlds. Having heard Saunders talk and read his guide to Russian short stories, I found myself often wondering what he as author was trying to do and how he came up with some of these ideas.

Tenth of December was my first time reading this author. I like some of those stories, but still didn't understand the "hype" that people i respect had for Mr. Saunders. After still more glowing reviews, I decided to try again. So glad I did! Unsure if the storytelling is that different, or if I'm just in a different place, but I loved these stories. Now I need to determine whether I read something different from him, or if I reread Tenth of December.
