I loved the mystery aspect, I was definitely shocked by the turnout, the author did an excellent job with the suspense. The detail and language was also exquisite. I think this is definitely one of my favorite classic reads!:)

This book was infuriating to read. Possibly the most unlikable main character of any book I've ever read. I love the short story, "The Birds", which is why I wanted to read Rebecca in the first place, but I'm still left reeling a little and not sure what to think. Was I meant to hate the main character and Max de Winter? Maybe I'm just not clever enough to understand. They are such atrocious people and I wanted them to pay for the horrible things they did. I'm 100% team Danvers and as far as I'm concerned she did nothing wrong! Those horrid people deserved much worse.

Strong beginning, strong ending, rooooough through the middle. I’d tried reading this for English class in high school and I can practically pinpoint the moment I must have given up on it then, because it was only by employing a Herculean power of will that I kept going this time. I couldn’t STAND the main character then, and I still can barely stomach her. I spent about 250 pages wanting to take her by the shoulders and shake her bodily. This time I tried to appreciate the fact that she is SO tiresome because it’s part of the story and a purposeful decision on the part of the author. That helped A BIT. I seriously feel for people who live with that level of low self-worth every day. I know it’s a real thing, and it must be EXHAUSTING. Props to you. Just know that you are worthy of choosing your own tea time! Anyway, it fiiiinally picked up again on page 300 and finished strong. Thank heavens.

When I read this in high school I liked its creepy oppressiveness. And the first line is still one of my all-time favorite first lines ever, and is a perfect first line for this book. But man, did I despise Rebecca the second time around. I chalk that up mostly to the loathsome characters who populate the novel. I only liked Frank and Ben (poor Ben!). Everyone else was awful. EVERYONE. ELSE.

Up until the boat was discovered I loathed the de Winters most of all. Maxim de Winter was such a horrible, selfish jerk completely lacking in empathy (there are actually other words I used to describe him in the margins of the book, but they're really not appropriate to use in polite company). And the narrator, only known to us as Mrs. de Winter...ugh! I just wanted to tell her to grow a pair and stand up for herself. People walked all over her and she acted like she deserved it. Her relationship with Maxim was seriously unhealthy and emotionally abusive. That kind of changed after the boat was found, but by that point I disliked them both so much that it was too late.

Mrs. Danvers is, of course, a horrible human being, but she was supposed to be, so I kind of liked her in all her evil awfulness, even though I wanted her to suffer. All the busybodies who visited Manderley at one point or another were so clueless and awful in their tactlessness and I couldn't stand them. And Rebecca... Seriously, from the get-go all I could see was a mean girl who manipulated all the minions around her with her awfulness, and they loved her for it like the clueless dimwits that they were.

Yeah, Rebecca just made me angry. I don't think two pages went by without my adding comments about how much I couldn't stand so-and-so or how such-and-such was ridiculous and how could no one see that. I can't recall being so consistently infuriated by a book before.
