I finished it in under 24 hours so that has to mean something, right?? 🥲

Honestly I spent most of this book getting frustrated with Sydney’s, our FMC, complete lack of ANY preservation skills. The red flags were coming her way flashing and screaming and she was ignoring them completely. Oh no I wonder what I should do if someone is stalking me?? Maybe if I ignore the situation, it’ll magically go away?!?! 😒

On another note, I’ve read like 4-5 other Freida books and I’m not going to lie, this particular twist got me. I’m usually able to guess parts of the story or at least one of the twists. And I’m always trying to think of the most absurd thing that might happen. But this one was actually a good one 😅  the epilogue thought felt a bit underwhelming for a Freida epilogue so there’s that. To this day I think The Inmate has probably her best epilogue.

Will I read another Freida Mcfadden book? Yes. Her books are so addicting and fast to read. 🙃

Loved it. Lots of twists and turns and unexpected bits! You think you know and you really don’t!

The final twist got me, but I didn't like the main character. She felt too flippant about the whole "murderer on the loose" thing for my patience, lol.

Narrator Rating: 1.0 stars
The narrators directly impacted my lack of enjoyment of the book, so I'll discuss them first. The male narrator was annoying AF, I get they wanted a teen male, but did they have to pick someone to do that voice that had such a whiny and grating voice? If you have to choose between listening or reading this book. I advise you to read a physical or e-copy, NOT listen to the audio.

Because of the awful narration I think I enjoyed the book less. The main female MC I found unlikable because she was SOO desperate to find a man. I could get that in a 20-something. But as someone in my mid-to-late thirties, I didn't find it as believable that she would just take any mediocre white dude, even if she couldn't see a future with him.
The mystery element I found great! If the main character had been even slightly likable I would have rated it higher, but I thought about DNF-ing around 53% but since I was already more than half-way through the book I soldiered on and finished it. Overall, I'd say it was meh.

Another book well done by Freida McFadden!! Twists and turns that make you think it's one person, no wait, now this person, what?! It's actually a person you didn't even consider! I was so frustrated by the naivety and of Sydney throughout the book and how she didn't go to the police with so many things. That brought it down a star for me. So many instances where I was internally screaming, "What are you doing?!"

While this author's books are never necessarily the most realistic or the most intricate mysteries, they are a massive amount of fun to read, and I think this one might be my favorite yet. I loved the premise and while I THOUGHT I had everything figured out by halfway through the book, there were a few things I was missing. There weren't any massive surprises by the end, but getting there was a blast and I tore through this book in about a day and a half because it was such good escapism at a time when I really needed it.
