I loved this book like all of her books you think that you know everything and the there comes Freida with another plot twist that you wouldn't expect. The plot twist was nuts I thought that something was going to happen and then there comes the actual antagonist. My jaw was on the floor.

It was a slow start, I almost DNF’d it, but it picked up gradually. By the end I was completely engaged.

disclaimer: I don’t really give starred reviews. I hope my reviews provide enough information to let you know if a book is for you or not. Find me here: https://linktr.ee/bookishmillennial

I listened to the audiobook on Spotify as I was traveling and this kept my mind pretty occupied for the entirety of it! It did start off quite slow, as in, 'is the thriller in the room with us? She's nowhere to be found right now.'  I also thought the premise gave away so much and led you to believe certain things about the killer's identity, that it contributed to me being underwhelmed with the first 50% of the book.

HOWEVER, the ending of this really saved this book for me. I gotta say ... I was not expecting that, and Frieda babe, you got me. What a delightful and exciting twist that was!

I didn't really enjoy The Locked Door (2021), which had corny dialogue and represented the Bay Area so poorly & disrespectfully lmao, BUT this was a much more compelling (&redeeming) read. I enjoyed the flashbacks and how they eventually revealed so much and contributed to the final reveal.

I will continue to sift through FM's backlist!

A lot of things felt really like a twist just to be different from what the reader expects.

I think the characters are interesting enough, but the ‘villain’ made no sense and was somewhat unbelievable. The ending too was just kind of awful. I think it sets up a second book well. Part of my dislike was because the characters weren’t fleshed out well, so their chemistry is somewhat unbelievable.

Audiobook. 4.25/5 stars

Fast, captivating listen! I did kind of predict how it would end, but as always, Freida McFadden has a way of keeping you guessing the entire book.
