One of the things I love most about reading thrillers is the thrill of guessing what will happen next—the suspense of the plot twist. The Boyfriend completely satisfied this craving, as I had no idea what was coming. I kept guessing and second-guessing, only to find out I was wrong every time. That unpredictability is what I love most about thrillers—the way they keep readers on edge, never knowing when or how events will unfold.

I give this book a perfect 5 stars because it hooked me so thoroughly that I finished it in a single day. While the ending might not be satisfying for everyone, I appreciated how it left room for interpretation, giving the reader something to ponder. Having already gotten used to McFadden’s writing style, with its chapters jumping between the present and the past, I found it easy to follow and thoroughly enjoyable.

Lidt tanker: Personerne i den her bog er så FUCKING dumme at det burde være ulovligt. Plothullerne var så store at man FALDT i dem. Twistet var sick, but at what bekostning??? For resten af handlingen hænger så på ingen måde sammen desværre. Reeeeen chokfaktor, men så fucking langt ude. Og PRØV at gør det mere åbenlyst?? I dare u. Alle de ledetråde er alt for excessive og jeg er ellers ikke kræsen. Standhaftig men ekstremt skuffet Freida fan som har svært ved at forsvare det her længere.

One day read!

FORMAT: Combo of physical & audio (2 narrators for the dual POVs, Tom & Sydney)

REVIEW: Sydney Shaw thinks she’s finally found the perfect man—charming, handsome, and a doctor—after a string of terrible dates. But when a series of murders points to a killer who dates his victims, her dream romance takes a dark turn. With someone watching her every move, Sydney must uncover the truth before she becomes the next victim.

RECAP: In addition to the dual POVs, we also have dual timelines. There was one twist that I didn't see coming, so that was fun! However, Sydney was one of the most frustrating, self-absorbed protagonists I’ve read—naive, shallow, and completely lacking growth. Her story revolves around dating struggles, jealousy, bad choices, and ends with no real development. She felt more like a cardboard cutout than a character.

I’m so frustrated it took me this long to discover McFadden’s work!

In The Boyfriend, we follow Sydney, who has been struggling with online dating but finally meets someone who seems perfect. However, as murders begin to unfold around the city, she starts questioning everything.

Initially, it took me a little while to get into the story, but after a few chapters, I was completely hooked. The unsolved murders, dual timeline, and suspense were executed brilliantly. I kept thinking I had figured out the twist, only for another one to surprise me. My only issue was the main character's shocking disregard for her own safety, though it does shed light on the dangers of online dating.

Victoria Connolly and Adam Blanford did an incredible job with their narration, and they’re a big reason why I kept listening. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more of their work!

I highly recommend this book, especially the audiobook, to anyone looking for a story that keeps you guessing until the very end.
