Firstly I was disappointed because I was expecting mystery. I thought these would be short, cheesy who-dunnits and instead they were spooky, ghosty stories of hauntings and possessions. There's a metaphysical world-view that I find quite unrelatable in that, especially when written seriously- not that I am a completely rational person but this sort of spookiness seems pointless and I just can't get into it.

Nevertheless I would have enjoyed the quality of writing if it wasn't for the constant overt racism and the sexism which was more backgrounded and taken for granted but there in most stories. It's no good trying to tell me that was "normal for the time" it jars to the 2019 reader and there's no point pretending otherwise. It's a shame because some of the authors in there could write really well. George Eliot was possibly a favourite out of the mix.

Anyway I pretty much think that be because this book is a collectible there are people who will be interested in it no matter what I say
