This wouldn't get published now. The book despite its grandiose title never gets beyond southern england. Wells raises some deep philosophical questions and constructs a brilliant villain. The characterisation is poor, plot thin and descriptions shoe horned in. Yet I couldn't put it down.

Writte between 1895-1897, now I understand why they say its ahead of its time. Definitely a classic. Will read it again soon.

I did not read the actual novel in this instance. I listened to the radio play that Orson Welles originally read and caused so much panic. This version of the performance was done by the LA Theater company and some members of the cast of Star Trek such as Leonard Nimoy and Will Wheaton.

I had never heard the play in its entirety and while listening to its simulated news casts and sound effects I kept thinking how scary it actually would be if I wasn't aware it was a drama! Nimoy of course does a fabulous job with the main narration.
