this book was better than i expected! eloise and sir philip are a match made in heaven. i could feel the tension between them while reading the book.

he had the idea that he needed a mother for his own kids, but then realized that he needed more than that. he realized that when he found out that Eloise was the sunshine to his darkness.

quotes that i’ll remember forever:
  • ‘i think it’s time to show you that we do’ (that they fit)
  • ‘he was hungry, needy, and he kissed her as if he would die without her, as if she were his very food, his air, his body and soul’
  • ‘men. the day they learned to admit to a mistake was the day they became women’

This was a weird one for sure. I got the direction that this story was trying to go for but I think the execution was done poorly and not as flushed out as it could've been. The unexpected concept of eloise landing in this place in her life was refreshing and hones in that life really can take you to different places that you wouldn't expect and lead you to people that you would probably never would meet. I just think the way it plays out in the book wasn't as charming or loving as it could be. I just couldn't get over the lack of respect that Philip had for women, especially marina and then to eloise. I wish they played out more with their letters and for them to heal eachother through words and love. I get that Philip irl rather on paper had a lot of shit he went through but the trauma bombing he layed out on eloise whenever she tried to comfort him really didn't not sit well for me. I know he constantly had his walls built up but it was exhausting always letting him win and eloise just out here confused and made her feel guilty for not being happy and for him to fix problems was just him getting his way with her. It was trying to give "philipp is different to other men and keep up with eloise outspoken nature" but to me it was giving disrespectful and just rude at times. I do like their loving moments together and it really seems that his walls were breaking down and she was trying to get through to him. I know he he has lacked love and it's definitely most likely why he is the way he is. Him being a Botanist is sweet and how passionate he is at his work that makes him great with eloise in the end. I did like then ending and the sweet moments together esp with their children. I'm glad he got his act together and stepped up being a father. My favourite scenes and I'm sure it's everyone's, is when the bridgerton bros came and I did laugh at how great that was. Overall I do like that they are together but my god how toxic it got to get there and I hope the show will flush them out better and show Philip in a side that is not a man that eloise needs but wants. Because eloise is a 10/10 girlie and deserves a man that treats her right. It will def be interesting yo see how they play out philipp in the show because show theo is a fan fave and the love letters need to be everything for people to love Phillip and be the man everyone roots for. Overall I do like the characters but the writing and pace of it was just off for me. The story and where it led is interesting but give me show eloise women's rights girlie, she don't need no man but have philipp show her she may not need one but he wants her, give me yearn pls for the love of gawd.

To Sir Phillip, With Love, is the fifth in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series, and follows Eloise, who is invited to meet a suitor she has only ever communicated with via letter, Phillip. I love Eloise but I am not fond of Phillip. I struggled rating this, I settled on 3 stars but I would probably have said 3.5, I love the series but I would not recommend book 5. A beautiful ending, a beautiful start, and beautifully written, but I have my fair share of issues with this story. The treatment of Marina, Phillip’s previous wife who passed away due to depression, never sat right with me. She is made out to be a burden on everyone’s life, which I don’t think is fair. Eloise is one of my favourite characters of the series, she is known for being a feminist of her time, and yet she ends up with a man who is quite frankly, misogynistic, very angry, and essentially only wants her for intimate purposes and to be a mother to his children (because he is basically an absent father). The book is written so well but I cannot envision Eloise with someone like Phillip, which made this hard to read. I’m not convinced with this love match but I still look forward to completing the series.
‘If one didn’t have love, was it better, then, to be alone?’
