I won this book in a giveaway. I am always amazed at how a poet can bring so much emotion in so few words. Lisa Dordal's description's of her mother's drinking problem, the hiding of jars, moved me because it made me remember, and feel, how this was with my mother. Honestly, the poems about her mother, and how she could never come out and be her true self, were heart-breaking. When the author talked about her own wedding and beginning "the long and tight-lipped death of my mother, who taught me how" or how she made herself "homely and shapeless" so the NO would come instead, from men, it made me sad. My oldest daughter identifies as bisexual, and I would never want her to feel this way about herself or have to subjugate herself to society's expectations. The author has a powerful voice, and a lot of people will be able to identify with her story. I usually donate a book after I have finished it (too many books, too little room) but I will be keeping and rereading this one!

I had not heard of this author before, but my wife, who knows my taste in poetry purchased this tome for me and I am grateful she did. Dordal takes us through and unflinchingly honest journey of growth and discovery and it felt like a privilege to be allowed glimpses of her experiences.
