There are so many things about this book that shouldn't work: second person point-of-view, no named characters, the protagonist's entire life told in a relatively short amount of pages. But this novel does work, brilliantly.

The structure was unique, the second person well done, and the tight writing brilliant.

THE first time ever that I found a book this drab. I just COULD NOT get myself to read it. Somehow managed to read it till 30 or so pages, and it was a TASK. Picked up this book only because I wanted to read a medium sized book to complete my reading challenge. There's just something extremely off putting about Hamid's writing that just doesn't resonate with me. Idk if it's coming from a bias of having had previously meh experiences of reading his work, but I did try this time to get myself into it but I couldn't. It's a no from me. Yikes.

A quick read that starts strong but looses itself in over sentimentaly, the framing device is a good choice and only wears patience towards the end.

The main strength of the book is to capture a sense of place and time, that I sense though have never explicitly seen. It brings understanding to corruption and to those who partake in them.
