When someone describes a person by saying, “She’s just real, you know?” we nod our heads, often without knowing exactly what they mean. Rosie Waterland is definitely “real”, and by this I mean her writing is open, honest and meaningful. Every Lie I’ve Ever Told is funny and heartbreaking, with tales from Waterland’s life as an adult and writer. Both of her books cover heavy topics like, addiction, mental health, child abuse, heartbreak and death, yet Waterland has this incredible ability to keep it funny while not making light of serious issues.

I saw Waterland at an event and thought she was great. Then I saw this book at the library and was gripped from the first pages.
Fast-paced and engrossing, I read this book in one weekend. It balances out the dark main storytelling thread with vignettes of other parts of her life, in relation to a lie. It was intimate and dark but also funny and cheeky. But also its jusy the author sharing parts of her life with us, even though they are messy.

Graphic: Suicide attempt and Alcoholism
Moderate: Emotional abuse

Rosie Waterland is hilarious and has an awful lot of stories to tell from her thirty-odd years. She had me laughing out loud from the very first chapter of this book. The chapter titles alone were enough to make me chuckle.
Rosie doesn’t shy away from the realities of her character and her behaviour regardless of how extreme or embarrassing it may be.
There are some tough topics covered in this memoir of a brief period of her life. It’s an honest, raw and brutal look at grief and mental health. Throughout, Rosie’s honesty and wit shine.

I love Rosie Waterland's hilarious, accessible and engaging writing style. I devoured this book within a couple of days and will be recommending it to all my friends! I admire her honesty about her mental health difficulties and her friendship with Tony gave me a renewed appreciation of my own friends.

Can't actually write a proper adult brain review because I'm still fucking crying. Brilliant, powerful book. Perfect follow up to The Anti-Cool Girl. Good work Rosie.
