The older I get the more I appreciate short stories- the chance to read a wholly encapsulated world in a shorter time frame. Sometimes it can be hard to find the time to read a chapter book. But this book also reminded me about the art of the short story- some of Tan's stories in this collection are only two pages, and yet she will spin you a whole world in that.
If you liked "Friday Black" by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, you'll find shades of that here, but with the added pleasure of being able to read about Australia and Asian-Australian perspectives. The tone also reminds me of "Why visit America" by Matthew Baker, but this is better than that collection... no wonder I had to return it to the library so quickly!

A very quirky short story collection. Loads of pop culture and unforgettable cats.
Definitely not the TS Eliot kind of cats.
It won the 2020 Readings Prize and has been nominated for a number of other Australian prizes. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Perfect choice for a reading rut - well-paced, compelling short stories punctuated with sharp and dry wit. Elements of magical realism which are just my cup of tea.
