The rape scene solidified how extraordinary bad Ayn Rand is a writer. The only woman in the story get subsumed by the protagonist. Awful book.
Amazing writing but couldn’t get hip with the philosophy of the main character and got to the point where there was no longer anything I felt drawn to in the character. I was visibly angry while reading so I decided to put an end to my misery. Tough call 300 pages in.
“ but why should you care what people will say? All you have to do is please yourself “ 📐🖊

I have more to say about this, but for now:
some of Rand's imagery works really well. The opening + ending to this novel could almost sell me. The preachiness and monologue-ing is unacceptable. Based solely on this novel, objectivism isn't dead wrong, it's just misguided - it seems to exist in a universe different than the one we actually live in. Or, I don't know - maybe it's just the wrong argument to be making.
I have to think about it more. And for that reason, 4 stars. I kind of hate that I feel like I have to explain that, but I don't want people thinking that I support Rand or her philosophy; I don't (and god, wouldn't she be pissed that I care what people think?). I don't think she's necessarily an amazing author, but she has her moments. I just appreciate things that make me think. I feel like Rand's work is important because it does make people think - even if what you think is that she's dead wrong, it opens a dialogue in a way that a lot of books don't. It's probably not what she hoped for, but I can dig it.
