I didn't expect it to be this good. This book is many things I wanted Leviathan to be. It's much shorter and less detailed than Leviathan, but still very good. Plus, who doesn't want a pirate girlfriend? I'm ready for more about Cas and Swift.

it took a dip in my interest towards about a third of the way in but it was worth it in the end. i love how cas sexuality was already defined before the story began

i have since written a spoiler free review: https://amberinoface.wordpress.com/2016/02/29/the-abyss-surrounds-us-by-emily-skrutskie-review/

DNF at about halfway. Great writing, love the concept (what's not to love about lesbian pirates raising baby sea monsters??), but the MC from the start was left with almost zero agency and the entire book is a long, extremely frustrating exercise in Stockholm Syndrome. She's surrounded by terrible people (pirates are more fun when they're not quite so murder-y imo), one of whom is somehow supposed to her love interest despite having no apparent redeeming qualities. Too stressful and dark for me. Gotta love Bao though!!! :)

How cool would it be for this to become a graphic novel?
