I’ve read a lot of WW2 historical fiction- this is so good. So many story lines and characters. Characters that I will miss now that I’ve finished this wonderful book.

Love!!! I loved this story, I listened to it as an audiobook and I loved the narration. The entire premise of the book being how important women and libraries are to communities. It really asks the question, is a community really a community without a library? The answer is no. Libraries are the backbone of a thriving society.

It was informative and the main characters were likeable, but I found the book a little "shallow." Perhaps I've read too many WWII historical novels, but this one didn't grab me like others have. The love storylines among the main characters seemed lacking in emotional detail, the marriage of older adults near end came out of nowhere (no buildup or mention of time together), the fostering was telegraphed from the get-go. Sadly, it was difficult to feel invested in the characters.

This book is like a love letter to librarians everywhere. Set in World War II in London’s East End, there is a library in the Bethnal Green tube station. There the listener meets a vivid cast of characters expertly voiced by narrator Sarah Durham. It is heartwarming and heartbreaking, and expertly researched by author Kate Thompson. A must read for historical fiction fans who love libraries. Received from libro.fm in exchange for an honest review.

Finding out there was a community living in the underground tube station was fascinating. This book was great!
