I preferred this to “Girl on the Train,” though it is widely thought to be worse. The audiobook is good with a whole cast of all the characters.
I had high hopes going into this one because I had heard good things, but unfortunately I was let down. The characters didn't have the development I needed for me to feel emotionally invested and I felt like a few of them were a bit wishy-washy and underdeveloped. It was hard to keep track of the events and motivations when some of the character actions just didn't make sense to me.
I think I liked this more than Girl on a Train. Yes, there are lots of characters, and yes it's hard to get into and understand at first because of this, but I felt the ending was worth it. I find domestic-fiction often very trite and unrealistic, this story seemed accurate to all characters, all of whom had separate motivations and acted authentically in their various interactions. I can see why many people won't like this book but the story redeemed itself, by coming to a realistic conclusion.
So highly anticipated yet so anti climatic.

I read this book and forgot. Very mid.
I did not like this as much as Girl on the Train. This was bleak and dark with too many characters and not enough suspense. However it was definitely a Hawkins novel with intricate writing and twisty turns.
